DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental implants are a long-term solution to replace missing teeth, which can help prevent damage to your jawbone. The roots of an intact adult tooth are burrowed deep into the gums near the jawbone. When you chew, the pressure causes the tooth roots to stimulate the jawbone, keeping it firm and healthy. That stimulation does not happen where a tooth is missing, which can weaken the jawbone. If you don’t get the missing tooth replaced with an implant, it can actually lead to future dental health problems and loss of bone mass in your jaw.

In order to ensure your health, Dr. Rice and his associates will first perform a comprehensive examination of your mouth. This includes diagnostic imaging with our Panorex system (short for “panoramic x-ray”). These images will reveal any dental health issues that may need to be handled before your implant surgery, such as:

  • Impacted teeth.
  • Oral cancer.
  • Fractures or bone trauma.
  • Gum disease.

The implant itself is a small titanium post that the doctor surgically places into your gums. To ensure the stability of the implant, you may need to receive bone grafting. During a bone graft procedure, the dentist attaches a material to any deficient areas of your jawbone. With time, your natural bone will grow over the new material and the implant, providing a strong base for your replacement tooth.

Once healed, the dentist will affix a crown to the top of the implant that looks, feels and functions just like your natural teeth!
